Case Study: Tracy Elementary School

Tracy, Minnesota

It takes a village, or in this case, a city! After several years of planning, the Parent-Teacher Club (PTC) at Tracy Elementary School was able to build a city within the city with a themed playground. The school partnered with community members and Commercial Recreation Specialists (CRS) to plan, design and install a city themed playground and coordinating safety surfacing.

The new playground incorporates a elaborate city theme to increase play value and promote imaginative play while dynamic components promote active recreation, balance, coordination and social interaction among students. The pour-in-place safety surfacing adds a touch of whimsy with a coordinating roadway design while providing needed fall protection.

The playground project was a cooperative effort between the PTC, the TAPS Board of Education, and US Bank. The PTC began student-led fundraisers back in 2015 to start raising the necessary funds for the project. US Bank and the Minnesota Vikings matched the $37,000 that the PTC had already raised, allowing construction on the new playground to finally begin.

Missie Erbes, president of PTC, states, “It’s been a long journey—a journey that began seven years ago for myself. We’ve had a few phases to get to this point, but this was always the dream. We couldn’t have done it without everyone’s hard work, fundraising, and the grant from US Bank and the Minnesota Vikings.“

CRS, the TAPS buildings and grounds crew and local volunteers worked together to install the playground in late August 2017, just prior to the start of the school year. Our CRS certified installer lead the community build of the city-themed playground which features several interactive elements for students including a fire hall, gas station, bank and a corner store.

With help from the community through fundraising and construction volunteering, Tracy Elementary now has a playground that the children will enjoy for many years to come.
