Case Study: Burlington Aquatic Center

Total transformation. Built in 1965, the Burlington Community Pool served as the community’s primary aquatics-based recreational facility for decades. But with dwindling membership and a growing list of required maintenance and repair items, city officials knew it was time for a change.

One of the primary project goals was to provide a facility that would cater to people of all age groups and abilities, a place the entire family and community could enjoy. Commercial Recreation Specialists (CRS) collaborated with Ayres Associates to custom design an entirely new, multi-generational facility, complete with a state-of-the-art lap pool, lazy river, custom pool slides, a Vortex Elevations water-play solution, an AquaClimb wall, shade structures, and more! CRS incorporated a Vortex Elevations play solution to offer younger children a multi-level adventure with a nearly endless array of moving parts and engaging water features. The lazy river provides a relaxing feature while also offering seniors an option to exercise as they try to build strength by walking against the current.

Custom pool sides are an attractive amenity to children and adults alike, while the bright colors provide a fun aesthetic appeal. The AquaClimb wall is a safe and exciting addition that provides a unique way for children to learn about climbing, take risks in a controlled environment and develop healthy skills.

The completed facility opened in the summer of 2018, with more than 38,000 guests visiting in its inaugural year! Director Jeanne Otter states, “It was fabulous. The response was overwhelming. People came from everywhere; once they walked through the doors, they were amazed.” The new aquatic center has been an incredible amenity to the Burlington community, and CRS was thrilled to help transform their outdated pool into a destination attraction.
