Case Study: Elver Park

Madison, Wisconsin

A cornerstone of the community. Spanning an impressive 250 acres in the southwest corner of the city, Elver Park is Madison’s largest community park. It has been a longtime favorite within the community, offering a variety of seasonal recreational activities, including disc golf, cross-country skiing, soccer, a summer farmer’s market and much more.

To further boost the park’s popularity and offer local residents expanded amenities, city officials wanted to incorporate a unique aquatic element to Elver Park. They worked closely with Commercial Recreation Specialists (CRS) to create an iconic destination at Elver Park, which included the addition of an interactive Splashpad, shade structures and ample seating. Madison Community Foundation (MCF) granted the Madison Parks Foundation $50,000 for the Splashpad project. Tom Linfield, Vice President of MCF, comments, “Elver Park Splash Park is the fifth splash park Madison Community Foundation has funded in the Madison area. These colorful, imaginative and free water playgrounds provide an economical compliment to Madison’s beaches and pools, and safe and fully accessible spaces that can be enjoyed by all generations and abilities. What a great way for families to beat the summer heat and have fun!”

The Splashpad design incorporates a combination of interactive vertical elements and lower stature features that incorporate brushed stainless steel and vibrant colors to create a memorable space. It also provides the park with an eco-friendly solution, as the Vortex recirculating water system treats and reuses the Splashpad water, conserving the city’s water supply.

In addition to the Splashpad, CRS assisted city officials in selecting Cantilever Single-Post Pyramid shade structures, which provide up to 196 square feet of shade from a single column. These additions provide ample shelter and shade from the elements and have been paired with generous seating so parents can relax in comfort and watch as their children play.

With the incorporation of the Splashpad and accompanying shade structures and seating, CRS was able to create a cohesive design for this community asset that will be enjoyed by Madison residents for generations to come.
